Saree Select was founded to address a need in the market, to make available to everyone affordable, unique and trendy Eastern apparel. Growing up in an Indian home meant weddings, weddings and more weddings! My mother would pay an excessive amount on the trendiest and most embellished garments for her daughters ensuring we always looked our best. There was always pressure to appear on point, wearing an unusual garment that by virtue of its unique appeal would be hard to forget. My first year in marriage and once my trousseau eventually ran out, I needed to buy a star-studded garment for a close family affair, I suddenly had no interest in buying an excessively overpriced garment to be worn for all of four hours, but my mother insisted. Having to pay for the garment myself, I was in excessive pain. Imagine how I could update my work wardrobe in comparison. I could purchase several blazers from Mango or Forever New, but no here I was at the elite Fordsburg boutique buying all of one Indo-Western saree suit for that price, and sadly I would never wear that garment again.

It then occurred to me that paying this excessive price was not just painful for me, but indeed others felt the same way. The average working woman would not be able to simply justify such a purchase. In their fast-paced lifestyles, they could instead invest in western apparel that would serve a daily purpose. So why not offer the average working woman convenience and affordability, the non - comital rental! Besides the millennials, what about people from diverse cultural groups that would like to partake in Eastern attire for a friend's wedding or heritage celebration, and if my mother could see the value in renting, then the older generation are becoming increasingly disillusioned with the exorbitant prices. Besides the excessive cost, I sometimes feel like I have seen eveeeeery saree before and since my co-owner is a lover of Indian apparel, and traveling. She could translate this into sourcing and buying exclusive Eastern garments internationally. (All our garments are handpicked and sourced by us!) We understand that life gets ahead of us and people have work, studies, family and one can't simply plan a trip to India, Singapore or Malaysia and sometimes sadly the ever-excited bride needs to settle for the not so exciting last year's trends available at the local boutiques.
